Welcome to the Norfolk & Southern Historical Society website!
This society is for the original Norfolk & Southern Railway that ran from Norfolk, VA to Charlotte, NC with
various branches (Aberdeen, Asheboro, Beaufort, Belhaven, Carthage, Columbia, Durham, Ellerbe, Fayetteville, Goldsboro (A&EC), Jackson Springs, Lee Creek, Oriental, Snow Hill (A&EC), Suffolk and Virginia Beach, VA).
It merged into the Southern Railway system on Jan. 1st, 1974.

The Town of Walstonburg is looking for any financial, material or labor donations to help with restoring their town depot. Contact for donations is Ronald Turner, Town Commissioner, Town of Walstonburg, 252-753-8711. (posted May 6, 2008)

Bob Reisweber and Bill McDonald's book on the Norfolk Southern has finally been published! Bill tells us currently that the only place that you can get it right now is from the book seller RAILS'N'SHAFTS and their telephone number is 610-261-0133. The LITTLE CHOO CHOO shop in Spencer might be getting some in this week also. If you deal with them ask for Wayne Freeze as he would know when they are getting the book. (posted Dec-20-2007)

We have been invited to attend a joint convention in 2008 by the Southern Railway Historical Association for the former lines of SR. It will be held in the Southern Museum of Civil Ware and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, GA. That museum will house the SRHA archives, including Marvin Black's large personal collection of NS official documents. (posted Aug-14-06, date changed to 2008)

The Oakboro Historic Foundation and Town are requesting any donations that can help with the construction costs and most importantly Norfolk Southern Railroad/Railway railroad memorabilia, items, pictures that can be donated for display and use by the Museum. NORFOLK & SOUTHERN HISTORICAL SOCIETY (2222 W. Club Blvd., Durham, NC 27705; 919/416-0965). The 2009 Annual Meeting of the Society will be held in Bonsal, NC on Saturday May 2nd, 2009. The Society is currently investigating places for boarding, lunch and to have our meeting. We will be partnering with New Hope Valley Railway. http://www.nhvry.org/
